Background information:
Like all models in the Highspeed series, The Com-Server Highspeed PoE 58642 offers everything you need for directly connecting a serial port to the computer network. In addition, the supply voltage per IEEE 802.3af (Power-over-Ethernet) can be provided over the network cable, with both phantom power over the data pairs as well as power using the wire pairs not used for 10/100BT. Problems with outlets, country-specific plug types, various AC voltages etc. are now a thing of the past.
For cases where PoE is planned but not yet fully implemented, it is also possible to provide power using an external power supply connected to screw terminals. From the software standpoint all the important standard protocols are included (see box and applications behind the product data sheets).
The serial port on the Com-Server is 20mA/TTY interface. The serial and network parameters can be set using telnet, ARP/RARP, SNMP or via Internet browser and Web-Based Management.
COM Port Redirector
The W&T COM Port Redirector for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP/2003 also gives serially operating Windows programs the ability to communicate over the network. Virtual COM ports are installed on the system which behave like standard COM ports with respect to the applications. Communication with the terminal device is now however over the network and a Com-Server (data sheet with download link).
